CleanLabel
Privacy Policy
Last updated: March 15, 2026
CleanLabel ("we", "our", "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your rights.
1. Information We Collect
1.1 Data You Provide
- Scanned ingredient labels: Text extracted from photos you take or select. Photos are processed on-device and via Google Cloud Vision for text recognition. We do not store your photos on our servers.
- Product submissions: If you submit a product (barcode, brand, ingredient list), this data is stored in our database to improve our service.
- Corrections and feedback: Reports you submit about ingredient data accuracy or app issues.
- Household profiles: Names, age groups, and dietary preferences you create for household members. This data is stored locally on your device.
1.2 Data Collected Automatically
- Unmatched ingredient analytics: When our parser cannot match an ingredient name, the unmatched text is sent to our server (Firebase Firestore) to help us expand our database. No personal information is attached.
- Country preference: Your selected country (used for regulatory scoring). Stored locally on your device.
1.3 Data We Do NOT Collect
- We do not collect your name, email, phone number, or any account credentials.
- We do not require account creation or sign-in.
- We do not collect location data.
- We do not track your browsing activity outside the app.
- We do not sell or share personal data with advertisers.
2. How We Use Your Data
- Ingredient analysis: To match scanned text against our ingredient safety database and generate Food Risk Scores.
- Database improvement: Unmatched ingredient names help us identify gaps in our database and add new ingredients.
- Product crowdsourcing: Submitted products and corrections improve data accuracy for all users.
3. Data Storage and Security
- Local storage: Scan history, watchlist, household profiles, and preferences are stored locally on your device using SQLite and AsyncStorage. We do not have access to this data.
- Cloud storage: Product submissions, corrections, feedback, and unmatched analytics are stored in Google Firebase Firestore with security rules enforced.
- OCR processing: Label photos are sent to Google Cloud Vision API for text extraction. Google's privacy policy applies to this processing. Photos are not stored after processing.
4. Third-Party Services
CleanLabel uses the following third-party services:
5. Data Retention
- Local data: Retained until you delete the app or clear app data.
- Cloud data: Product submissions and corrections are retained indefinitely to maintain database quality. Unmatched analytics are aggregated and individual entries may be purged periodically.
6. Your Rights
- You can delete all local data by uninstalling the app.
- You can request deletion of any data you've submitted to our cloud services by contacting us.
- The app works without an internet connection for previously cached data — you are not required to send any data to use core features.
7. Children's Privacy
CleanLabel is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. The household profiles feature allows parents to create child profiles for age-appropriate ingredient scoring, but this data is stored locally on the parent's device.
8. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The "Last updated" date at the top will reflect the most recent revision. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.

Always consult healthcare professionals for medical advice and verify regulatory information with official bodies.
